{"id":53595,"date":"2025-07-02T13:28:46","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T20:28:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.blindcoffeeroasters.com\/bcr\/?p=53595"},"modified":"2025-12-12T14:08:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T22:08:11","slug":"how-coffee-grows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.blindcoffeeroasters.com\/bcr\/how-coffee-grows\/","title":{"rendered":"From Flower to Fruit:  How Coffee Grows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;ve heard of coffee beans, but did you know that coffee is actually the seed of a fruit?<\/p>\n<p>Coffee is a small tree or shrub, growing about 8-15 feet tall depending on growing conditions.\u00a0 As a tropical plant, it grows easily in an area commonly called The Bean Belt which includes Central American, parts of South America, most of Africa, and parts of Asia.<\/p>\n<h3>Growing<\/h3>\n<p>As an understory plant (shorter than tall trees), coffee generally prefers to growing in partial shade and moist soil.\u00a0 Some coffee is Certified Shade Grown.\u00a0 This means that the coffee industry does not destroy the local ecosystem to make a coffee plantation.\u00a0 Coffee can also be Certified Bird Friendly which means that larger trees that the birds depend on for habitat remain on the land and coffee professionals grow the coffee in their shade.\u00a0 Coffee produces white flowers that\u00a0after pollination turn into\u00a0berries that ripen on the tree.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ng-isolate-scope ui-resizable aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.mlcdn.com\/account_image\/197266\/Td4uGNHbBAI0oy0eHfQL6OwEdKDPlm6QMDzNdhht.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Harvesting<\/h3>\n<p>Different varietals grow better at different altitudes.\u00a0 At higher altitudes the sugars in the fruit oxidize less, and the coffee <a title=\"Demystifying Coffee Tasting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blindcoffeeroasters.com\/bcr\/demystifying-coffee-tasting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">develops a sweeter flavor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Coffee cherries on the same tree ripen at different times.\u00a0 For this reason, it&#8217;s not realistic to harvest it with machines.\u00a0 Instead, coffee farmers pick each cherry by hand, and harvest the same tree several times as more cherries become ripe.\u00a0 Coffee harvesting is labor intensive and takes a great deal of care and attention to detail.<\/p>\n<p>After harvesting, coffee is processed.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll remember from earlier that coffee processing is simply the way producers remove the fruit from the pit, and that <a title=\"How Coffee Processing Changes the Flavor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blindcoffeeroasters.com\/bcr\/how-coffee-processing-changes-the-flavor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">different processing methods bring out different flavors<\/a> in the cup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ng-isolate-scope ui-resizable aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.mlcdn.com\/account_image\/197266\/zAS1eGnhSVBnHuhWdCNTBPfesWQBeEEXIxKyjJ2Y.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Coffee can also make a fun houseplant in colder regions.\u00a0 It&#8217;s unlikely to flower and produce fruit unless you have a greenhouse, but it still makes a beautiful addition.<\/p>\n<p>Running low on your favorite beans?\u00a0 <a title=\"How Coffee Grows\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blindcoffeeroasters.com\/bcr\/product-tag\/certified-organic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Try some of ours here<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You&#8217;ve heard of coffee beans, but did you know that coffee is actually the seed of a fruit?
